“A strong assumption within Toyota’s culture is that managers are leaders and leaders are teachers. This is something you cannot easily see simply touring a Toyota plant. The most important job of the manager is to teach young members Toyota’s way of defining, analyzing, communicating, and solving problems.”
Toyota Culture by Jeffrey Liker & Michael Hoseus (McGraw Hill, 2008) pp. 9-10.
Note from Ray: Notice that the quote DOESN’T say that the most important job of the manager is to teach young members Toyotas way of building cars. Of course they teach young members how to build cars. But the “most important” thing they teach is how to respond to problems.
